Opening of the Legal Year Annual Service – Sunday 12 October 2025 

          

Three of the Society’s office holders took part in the North Eastern Circuit’s Annual Legal Service at York Minster to mark the opening of the legal year. President, Christopher Carney of Schofield Sweeney and Vice President, Vicky Medd of Ridley and Hall Solicitors are pictured, along with Past President Jim Staton of Schofield Sweeney, who is now President of the Yorkshire Union of Law Societies.
The procession included solicitors from across Yorkshire,  barristers, District and Circuit Judges as well as Judges of the High Court, 2 Lords Justice of Appeal and the Deputy President of the Supreme Court. Other notable figures were the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire,  various High Sheriffs, the King’s Remembrancer and the Lord Mayor of York.

Family Law Training with Broadway House Chambers – Wednesday 24 September 2025 

The second of a series of family law training sessions took place at the offices of Eaton Smith Solicitors from 4-6pm.

The speakers were Ned Sproston and Emily Hughes of Broadway House Chambers, who spoke on the topic of private law children: Preparing for Contested Hearings and How Pathfinder is Being Implemented by the Judiciary.

Annual Softball Competition at Outlane Cricket Club – Wednesday 9 July 2025

The annual softball tournament took place at Outland Cricket Club. Congratulations to the winners, defending champions, Walker Singleton. Eaton Smith Solicitors were in second place and Schofield Sweeney in third. Thank you also to Ramsdens Solicitors, Angela Viney Conveyancing Services and Wheawilll and Sudworth for taking part.

Family Law Training with Broadway House Chambers – Thursday 5 June 2025 

         

The first of a series of family law training sessions took place at the Lawrence Batley Theatre. This will take place four times per year, with a  different firm hosting it each time.  There will be talks on 4 different subjects throughout the year – finances, children, domestic abuse and TOLATA.

The speakers wereDornier Whittaker and Chris Rowe of Broadway House Chambers, who spoke on the topic of Matrimonial vs Non-Matrimonial assets, along with practical guidance as to how the classification affects awards made in financial remedy cases.

Round the Res – Thursday 15 May 2025 – Scammonden Water

.   

The annual Round the Res 5km running and walking competition took place again at Scammonden Water.
Thank you to SallyAnn Masih of Schofield Sweeney Solicitors who organised the event.
25 teams took part. The winning runners were from Ramsdens Solicitors and the winning walking team was from Eaton Smith Solicitors.

Law School Challenge Charity Quiz – Thursday 27 February 2025 – Smile Bar, Aspley, Huddersfield

                  

 

Another successful charity quiz night, held jointly between the Society and the University of Huddersfield’s Law School. at the Smile Bar. 

The quiz was in aid of LawWorks and Advocate, as part of the Law School Challenge. The winners were Eaton Smith. Thanks to all members who took part.
