Great Legal Charity Quiz – 1 December 2021
Empire House, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield
The Huddersfield & Dewsbury Incorporated Law Society and the University of Hudddersfield Law School came together to take part in the Great Legal Charity Quiz on Wednesday 1 December in the beautiful surroundings of Empire House, Slaithwaite.
£92.50 was raised in aid of the Access to Justice Foundation who are a pro bono charity.
Congratulations to the winners, Disken & Co, and thank you to everyone else who attended from the University of Huddersfield, Ramsdens, Schofield Sweeney and Ridley & Hall.
Annual General Meeting – 24 November 2021

The 140th AGM was held in person.
President James Staton of Schofield Sweeney Solicitors hosted a lunch before the meeting. Alastair James of Ramsdens Solicitors was elected President and Ellie Hirst of Chadwick Lawrence was elected as Vice President.
A Special Resolution was passed to amend the Articles of Association to introduce a Corporate Membership structure.
Annual Dinner at Manor House, Lindley
Friday 22nd October 2021
Our Annual Dinner took place after having to be rearranged from the previous year due to the pandemic in beautiful surroundings. Our President James Staton and Vice President Alastair James welcomed guests and gave an address to over 130 guests.
Comedian Dr Kevin Jones entertained guests and then afterwards there was an after dinner DJ.

Yorkshire Union – SQE Round Table Event – 9 June 2021

Great Legal Quiz
21 November 2019 – The Corner Taphouse, 5 Market Walk, Huddersfield
The event was a great success and well supported by a number of firms. Over £300 was raised for legal aid charities (50% to The Access to Justice Foundation and 50% divided between LawWorks and Advocate) in conjunction with the University of Huddersfield’s Legal Advice Clinic and the Law School Challenge. Congratulations to the winning team from Switalskis Solicitors.

Leeds Legal Walk 2019

A team of walkers, made up of Society members a number of our committee members, took part in the Leeds Legal Walk in aid of the Yorkshire Legal Support Trust. Our Guest Speaker for the evening was former rugby league referee Julia Lee, sponsored by Lumley Baxter Asset Management LLP. Julia gave an inspiring talk on her life and how she became the first female referee in men’s rugby league. Guests were also treated to close up table magic by Miss Magic who was kindly sponsored by France & Associates. Arena Group kindly sponsored our arrival drinks.

The Great Legal Quiz
The Great Legal Quiz took please on Thursday 1 November 2018 at The Corner Taphouse and was very well attended by our members as well as staff and students from the University of Huddersfield and their Legal Advice Clinic as part of Justice Week.
In addition to the quiz, hosted by our Honorary Secretary Natalie Gibson and Phil Drake from the University of Huddersfield’s Legal Advice Clinic, there was a charity raffle. On the night £350 was raised for the Access to Justice Foundation through the Yorkshire Legal Support Trust. Thank you to all who attended and supported this event.

Free Risk & Compliance Training hosted by JLT Legal Practices Group

Colin Taylor, Head of Risk Management at JLT Legal Practices Group discussed “Can you make money from de-risking?”
JLT believes it is possible to reduce exposures and the costs associated by raising risk awareness among fee earners including Partners. Our lunch and learn session provided members with insights to transform the often negative attitudes to risk and compliance. The most common feedback has been “that was surprisingly informative and entertaining”. Thank you to JLT for the delicious lunch and to Chadwick Lawrence for hosting us.
Annual Softball Competition – 5 July 2018 at 6pm
The Annual Softball Competition was held at the YMCA. The winning team was Walker Singleton who were making their debut at the event.

Annual Dinner – Thursday 31st May 2018 – Berties – Elland
The speakers for the evening were our President, Ashley Iredale and Vice President, Samantha Spain and Guest Speaker, crime author Amit Dhand. Amit was raised in Bradford and spent his youth observing the city from behind the counter of a small convenience store. After qualifying as a pharmacist, he worked in London and travelled extensively before returning to Bradford to start his own business and begin writing. The history, diversity and darkness of the city have inspired his DI Harry Virdee novels, ‘Streets of Darkness’ and ‘Girl Zero’.
A charity collection for Huddersfield Mission raised over £500. Thank you to all of our members and their guests who supported the event.

Huddersfield & Dewsbury Incorporated Law Society 136th Annual General Meeting 2017
The Annual General Meeting was held at the Railway Street offices of Chadwick Lawrence on 22 November 2017. A speech was delivered on behalf of the out-going President Sarah Cookson who has overseen a very successful year for the Society. Sarah’s speech can be found in full here.
The meeting also saw new President Ashley Iredale of Schofield Sweeney and Vic President Samantha Spain of Switalskis take office.

The Annual Law Society Dinner was held at Berties LaCachette in Elland in March 2017. The event was very well supported by a number of local firms and the guest speaker was motivational speaker Nicky Pattinson. President Sarah Cookson and Vice President Ashley Iredale also gave speeches. A charity collection for Mirfield’s Hollybank Trust on the night raised over £580. Thank you to all members who attended.
Cheese & Wine Evening 2017
In February 2017, Czerwiks of Brighouse provided an excellent selection of their cheeses and wines for members to sample. Music from James Munroe also made for a wonderful evening’s entertainment for members.
The inaugural Round the Res event 2017
The inaugural Round the Res event was held at Scammonden and was a huge success with 24 teams taking part. The winning runners were from Schofield Sweeney and the victorious walkers were from Simpson Wood. The Swan pub provided excellent hospitality after the event. Look out for detail of next year’s event in 2018!
Conveyancing Training 2017
A free conveyancing training seminar was held in January 2017. Groundsure provided a presentation to members on the potential consequences of HS2. STL presented on the topic of the growing risk of Japanese Knotweed.
